About the Author
Charles Taylor, professor of philosophy at McGill University in Montreal, is the author of many books, including Multiculturalism: Examining the Politics of Recognition (1994) and Reconciling the Solitudes: Essays on Canadian Federalism and Nationalism (1993). A longer version of the present essay originally appeared in German in the Winter 1997 issue of Transit, published by the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.
