About the Author

Clement Nwankwo is executive director of the Constitutional Rights Project, a leading Nigerian human rights group. During Nigeria’s recent elections, he served as chairman of the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), a coalition of Nigerian human rights and civil-society groups that trained and deployed almost 11,000 election observers to monitor polling throughout the country. He received this year’s Democracy Award from the National Endowment for Democracy on behalf of the TMG at a Capitol Hill ceremony on 25 May 1999.
